My Shetland Trip

I was working in Shetland last week and hoped to get a good few pics, unfortunately, for the first four days, a North Sea mist decended on the island and it was so thick you could not see more than 50 feet. On my last day on the island I managed to get a few pics as the mist lifted. I used a little Photoshop effects to put some colour into the pics, as the sky was still a bit white from the mist, and the original pics seemed a bit washed out. I used Adobe's Lightroom to make a flash gallery, and you can see it here if you are interested.

I used a DS and a 18-55mm D lens, I also had my old Pentax 75-150mm zoom and a Tamron 500mm mirror that I got second hand. I was surprised how well the 75-150mm performed. I used it a lot on my Z1, now I must try a few more shot with it on the DS. It seems to be quite sharp and show good contrast.

Thanks for sharing. The landscapes, whether or not PSed are just excellent. Makes one want to get out of this season called summer.

Nice pics, but the viewing experience is somewhat spoiled by the appalling interface. I couldn't face trying to wade my way through to the end.

It's would be much nicer if you could just load a page of thumbnails linked to pictures. As you seem to be using a Mac I can't advise how to do it, but in Windows Irfanview is just the ticket.

there's a free program called galerie http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/
does a nice job as does iPhoto 6.
the flash slideshow is nice but I too am impatient and did not watch all the slides.

The Adobe Lightroom interface was just an experiment, I'm not sure I like it that much either.
I put the same pics on page 7 here, using Apple's iWeb app. I quite like this one and it is very easy and quick to use.

Though I have to say that when I visited Shetland, the sea didn't look quite that colour! Moderation is a good motto, even with Photoshop.

I forgot to say nice pics....with iweb, did you know you can layout one page, removing the apple logo from the bottom (and adding your own, with copyright notice), and simply copy it to use it as a template for all your pages, then add your pictures to each copy?

I'm still finding my way with iWeb, but I see what you mean. I must re-vamp the site over the next few weeks. I was just keen to get something up and running.

George, I know what you are saying, I was just desperate to get some pictures, but with work and weather conditions restraining me, the first chance I got I was off. You can see from the original pic of the cruise ship, the mist was still lifting, and the pic needed a lift. I must admit I'm not keen on pics with a lot of work and some of these are a bit over the top, I'm going to the West Coast of Scotland next week, and restraint will be my by-word.

I know what you're saying abou getting something up and running.
my site is always a work in progress.
I'm probably not the most proficient, but can share what little i do know.
I hid my web counter by placing a black square over it and have hidden easter eggs in there the same way. it allows me to experiment on different things while not making everything available to everybody.lol.

iWeb made it very easy for me to get some pics on the web, but as with most Apple apps, there is a lot more to the app than they advertise, which is good, as total beginers, like me, can get good results, but also people with more experience can get something out of it too.
I must admit I like looking at the pictures the people on these forums post. There is nothing like looking at other peoples pics to inspire you. I know I could look elsewhere for pics, but being a Pentax geek, here is a good start. Maybe there could be a new section for users pics or links to web pages of Pentax users ? How about each user posting one picture, a favourite or a memorable pic or one that is special to them and why ?

re the page itself, nice touch putting a transparent gif over the images, to protect them from getting stolen. It should keep the casual thieves away, but you would probably be better off watermarking or signing them if you want to make sure of that. It's only a couple of seconds to get the piccy of the 'spot, for instance. I won't say how for obvious reasons though..

LiamD, er, thanks for the compliment, but all I did was throw the pictures at the iWeb application, it does the rest. It actually reduces the picture size to a size that I thought would be unuseable for copy purposes. Must add watermarking to my 'to do' list, there is so much to think about. I just hope that people that view the images get a little bit of enjoyment out of it, I enjoyed taking them.

I did enjoy the pictures a lot, hence thinking that they were good enough to protect. I thought that you'd made them secure yourself with the transparent gif overlay, because it is a good idea..

The large images are probably just printable, but there's plenty of people out there willing to copy photos on to their own website and pass off your work as their own.

I've built a few web sites, and just like to help out where I can..

I find this useful for watermarking. I've been experimenting with it and JAlbum a little here

The watermark can take many forms and be placed anywhere on the page. It'll also take .PSD files in and churn out watermarked 'JPG's optionally resized and resampled. Its available in both mac & windows versions.

One thing I don't like about it is the fact that it can use a root + child folders for its input but doesn't preserve them in its output.

It has a 'try it out' mode. Buying it will set you back only $20 or £11. It certainly takes the pain out of watermarking and protecting your hard work from theft.
