8Ft garden canes are even cheaper and can be bundled together to make much stronger beams ie 7 x 1/2" canes produes a bundle about 1-1/2" dia which is stronger than a single of the same dia.

That's known as a laminated beam and they would all have to be glued together for the full length to stop them deflecting. Also they wouldn't be round enough to spin smoothly

Don, I'm about to shoot a commercial/promo for for a new range of American hair products. I've decided to use a K5 since everbody else uses Canon EOS.

I dont know yet what editing platform we'll use but do I need any Pentax codecs or are the files easily recognisable?
How did your shooting go? I'm excited about the prospect of another Pentax video shooter......

Good idea Don.... doesn't need as much floorspace as a tripod light stand

Some old Hi-Fi speaker stands could also be used especially if they are the weighted type... just cut off the platform that the speaker rests on

It is sturdy enough for a portable flash or spring clamp light.
Now that the studio is up and running, I will be doing more polished videos weekly on a wide gamut of subjects, but mostly photography... and videography.

I hope people wanting answers will post thier questions here, as I'll be using my friends in this forum for inspiration when thinking up projects for future episodes.

That's excellent Don, especially when you see the price of
a commercial one A plywood box lined with polystyrene
or radiator reflection foil would work as well. I like
the cold fluorescents but be careful to make sure that they
cover most of the spectrum.

... the bought ones are that price for a reason.
1. Guaranteed dispersion
2. portability
3. durability

that's not to say that they aren't overpriced, but after building one myself, I understood a lot more why we pay money for these things.

Besides, you'd get laughed at on a shoot with a home-made 'box.

Laughed at? by whom? the other photographers?
Whenever I get laughed at while on a shoot I just smile and remind myself the guys doin the laughing are the same guys the client didn't choose to hire...and I laugh all the way to the bank!

There are three reasons to go all MaGiver on your gear....
1) you don't have the money for the "Real deal", until you get some jobs, but you won't get the jobs if you have no gear....
2) you want to experiment without breaking the bank.... once you decide what gear you'll actually use, then you buy.
3)You've arrived at the job, but your gear took a wrong turn somewhere. YOU are the guy that delivers RESULTS not EXCUSES. That is what you promise now you got fifteen minutes and a roll of duct tape... make the shot or go home. (hint: you'll find elswhere in the forums I advocate using coolers as camera cases when travelling, you put the camera in a camera bag and the bag in a cooler.... so if I got a camera and a cooler and a roll of duct tape on me, I take a white t-shirt and portable flash out and can make a softbox if I have to....)

I don't know if you are aware of it, but things loose in a polystyrene box can't get broken. There's no need to pack them with tissue paper etc so that they can't move. They showed it years ago on a TV program called "Tomorrows World". They put an egg into a polystyrene box and threw it onto the hard studio floor from the top of an 8ft stepladder. Then they did the same with an expensive bone china teapot and nothing broke

The good thing about building your own lightboxes is that if your making one that uses Quartz bulbs, you can add a small cabinet for "Warming Pies"
