Mozilla Firefox 3 - Colour management

This essential for photo viewing in my opinion, just installed and I realised the difference it makes

I heard it was supported, but had not investigated enough to know you had to turn that on manually.

I've just downloaded Firefox 3 and installed it on my PCLinuxOS system and, to be frank, am not at all certain about it yet. Before I put my foot in it too much, how are you finding the results with images, say, posted on this site? I've browsed through a couple of dozen pictures, here and on Photo.net, and am finding the results to be generally too dark and contrasty for my taste. Could it be my system? It is colour managed, through an Argyll CMS/ Spyder 2 generated profile, so I expected results to be better.

Pretty much everything displays OK with Firefox 2 so I'm wondering if pictures tend to get posted to look OK with a non colour managed browser (but that argument gets blown away with Mac users posting pictures that look good with Safari).

Any Ideas?

The results I was getting by turning on colour management in Firefox 3 were so bad that I was trying to rationalise what might be the reason for it. One theory I had was whether it was because people were posting images that looked good in a non-colour managed browser and Firefox 3 was simply showing the images as they really were. But then I realised that a fair proportion of users here would be posting images through a colour managed browser such as Safari so that immediately shot down my own theory.

I think I've got to the bottom of it, though, at least as far as the Linux version are concerned. In the Windows version of Firefox 3, there appears to be no need to set the path to your .icm profile in the "gfx.color_management.display_profile" preference, at least not on the wife's Windows Vista PC. Firefox just finds it as a matter of course if you turn colour management on.

The behaviour in the Linux version seems to be completely opposite to this and, if you don't set the path to your .icm profile, you end up with truly horrible results. I've now set this, restarted Firefox, and results are very much improved. This may be of use to the other Linux users on this forum.

Thanks Adrian ... so much to learn!

It makes my pictures look very dull and they are processed and exported in sRGB colour space to make them as web compatible as possible.

I have disabled the colour management because of this.
