Mount strength

Something in a thread about the Bigma made me wonder: how heavy a lens can the mount on our modern DSLRs bear without support? Expecting the camera to bear the weight of a Bigma or similar is probably a good recipe for a snapped-off K mount, but what about the fair few lenses (the DA*60-250 and Sigma 180mm Macro spring to mind) which come in at about 1kg or so? Where do the folks out there with heavy lenses draw the line between lenses which can just be carried on the camera, and those which require special measures such as a strap attaching to the lens tripod socket?

I knew there was a reason why I was only really happy using the K 85-210mm on the KX or MX. Something to do with the fact that it weighs the best part of a kilo and has no tripod ring, so you really want something which is metal from the tripod thread to the lens mount to attach it to!

I sometimes wonder about the K300/4 on my K20D. The lack of tripod mount on that lens is a little worrying!

With any equipment you have to devise a safe way of
handling/holding and transporting. Big lenses on a body are
safer carried vertically preferably above the camera body
with both hands. In use they should be handled with both
hands, tripod mount or not. Massive lenses are probably better
handled by the lens only as much as possible.

The mount on the Pentax is directly mounted on the metal chassis inside on all there K DSLR camera's so they should be pretty strong.
Some other manufactures don't use a metal chassis on their budget camera's or even mid ranges one so their mount is mounted on plastic... One more reason to buy a Kx or Kr instead of another brand
