The Redsnapper seems sturdy enough Doug, and has a handy QR plate included in the price. It easily supports my rather heavy Sigma 150-500. Build quality is absolutely fine.
However, I don't think I get on with mine. Possibly haven't the patience to learn correct technique. I haven't had any real problems at low shutter speeds because of either the Pentax SR or the Sigma OS which is why I haven't persevered

Monopods are a waste of time.... they rotate too easily
A bipod would be better

I find a monopod really useful when hiking as it provides that extra stability to ensure pin sharp images, especially when the wind is trying to blow you off the mountain.
I have a Slik Pro Pod 381CF (superceeded by 382 CF) and use it with the Manfrotto 234RC head - it's excellent and pretty lightweight although it's also a bit on the expensive side for a monopod
I previously used the Redsnapper monopod which is very sturdy, only swapped to reduce the weight I'm carrying and it would certainly get my recommendation

Thanks folks, I have a CF tripod so I guess I just have to carry that around a bit more rather than spending out on a monopod.
Lurking is shirking.!

What are the panels views on monpods?
Favourite monopods in a reasonable price bracket < £75 ( including head)
And what is the redsnapper like at £27?
Thank you
