Monitor About to Fail

My monitor seems to be on the blink so I have started the hunt for a new one. I have seen the Dell 2209 mentioned a few times, but I assume they have been discontinued as they seem to be in very short supply. Does anyone use or have experience of the Dell U2412. It seems to be one of the few monitors around with a 16:10 ratio (rather than 16:9.) which I’m thinking is more like a photographic ratio, or does it not matter?

Barrie - I use Micro Direct for pc gear. I'd recommend the Ilyama range of monitors, although I think they are also pretty good price-wise on Samsung monitors.

Or, here's a 19:10 monitor...

Ilyama are very good.
So are the LG Flatron range.
I ran the first for two years (a CRT job, from a work-station, on loan from my old department). Currently I have two of the second make running. Just make sure that you can get drivers for any peripheral kit you might have - some graphics tablets, in particular, may not support a particular monitor.
For me, the 1st consideration is always the availability of matt screens (OK, so it's personal preference and you may not be bothered).

Thanks Steven, Unless I've picked up the wrong one that second link is a 16:9.

Geoff again thanks. I do use a Thrust graphics tablet and had no idea it may be a problem. Also could you elaborate on your "matt screen" comment. As far as I was aware all the monitors I've used have been matt screen.

Another vote for Iiyama (and Micro Direct). I prefer the 4:3 format. You need a heck of a size of widescreen monitor to get the same vertical height as you do with a 4:3. I find this format is more suitable for photo editing, desktop publishing and word processing.

Swings and roundabouts because if you edit panoramas or anything in 16:9 then you are losing out. Also if you watch films etc. on a 4:3 then again it just doesn't look right.

The big majority of flat screens now are made with a glossy finish, and are very reflective. You get a better idea of what the image looks like when you are not seeing too much ambient light reflected from the screen.
Go into PC World or Comet (or both) and look at the monitors - and then ask one of the helpful assistants if they can show you a matt finished screen.
The trouble is that glossy screens look brighter (particularly under showroom lights) and they look more impressive.

I have recently bought the Dell U2412 and would definitely recommend. Superb monitor at a realistic price. Have you checked any reviews - have a look at this link

You do need to alter the colour settings for photo editing work and the review goes into a lot of detail regarding this.
Got mine from here link. Ordered in the afternoon, arrived next morning and free delivery.

Hope this helps

A little off-topic (surely not) but my old laptop failed and I've just bought a new Samsung.

Apart from the ludicrously fast processor, the main thing which strikes me is just how impressive the monitor is. I think this is as good a 17" monitor as I have ever seen! Exceptional colours and clarity.

I can honestly see no readon to use a desktop again!

i have a LG ISP 23 on order (from Father Christmas and I have been a good boy)according to one of the computer experts in our club(he is in charge of a large government department) most cheap screens are 6 bits and fudge to make 8 bits, IPS screens are true 8 bits, the same as very high priced screens as used for very high class graphics company's.

The LG IPS comes strait out of the box giving good colours,he didn`t need to calibrate the screen, and at $A199 in AU it is very good value
