Went for a walk and drive earlier today and decided to leave the 400-600 behind.

So, standing looking out at the ocean and there is a little speck of black and breaking water.

So, DA*300 and 2.0 TC - NOT good enough ! I needed the 400-600 to capture the pair of whales. Even when zoomed in on the image it is not good enough!

not quite the same magnitude, but I was at a wedding on Saturday. I thought "I'll need the 50, and a standard zoom, but I will leave my telephotos behind to save space".

I got to the church early and as I was waiting for others to arrive a buzzard swooped in and perched about 30 yards from me.

I swear they have some sort of ESP which allows them to know the maximum effective range of any camera/lens combination you may happen to be carrying, and stay just outside it.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

I can just imagine the conversation between bride and usher;

Bride: Have you seen my mother, and where is the photographer?

Usher: Last time I saw him he was round the corner photographing some old buzzard
