Mirror / back-up software

What I would really like is a piece of software which compares the contents of directories A, B and C on one hard disk with a second disk, and then copies the new files (or newer files) across so that the listed directories are exact mirrors of each other.

I am using a PC, and we are talking about 200 gigs or so, so not a commercial operation.

Any recommendations?

some of the stuff which comes with external drives already have software install on them that will do that option I have a western dig and a maxor both have software for back up but only when timed to take place or on demand

On a basic level the Microsoft Powertoy, SyncToy http://tinyurl.com/ysc45p does this.

It is pretty easy to configure, but there is no scheduler included.

Scooter Software's "Beyond Compare" is, without a doubt, the best directory sync tool I have ever used

Use it daily (and even scripted as well!) - for images between four backup HDDs, for software source-code, and general DIFF work as well

I have used both Microsoft powertoy SyncToy and Beyond compare. Both are excellent little softwares in my experience.

If you know a little bit about DOS, or are willing to learn, you can write your own ".bat" DOS batch file (program) utilising the XCOPY command. It would only take a few lines.

It won't delete files from the backup, so you would have to delete unwanted files manually, or delete the entire backup then re-backup.

However, if you don't actually need the backup to consist of normal files like this, a lot of space would be saved by using a program such as Acronis True Image that can make compressed backups, and incremental backups (backup changed files only).
