The forecast was for clear skies and this provided an opportunity to photograph the Milky Way and stars over the lighthouse at Nash Point in Wales. When we arrived the the wind was howling and patchy clouds were racing overhead which were illuminated at each sweep of the light.

Thank you Spad, yeah I use several, from Photophills to the The Photographer's Ephemeris to Stellarium to name a few when planning and understanding the position of the Milky Way in relation to my subject, even find google earth 3D can be useful to understand topography, allowing you to visualise the location without actually being on location fist.

Got to make use of what you find, I often find a little light pollution can help with an astro shot if as in this case you have broken and patchy clouds as they catch the ambient light and help create some distance and depth to a 2d image. One day i'll go to somewhere like Tenerife or Madeira and capture the night sky above a sea of cloud.

Cannot wait for that day!!! You have also given me an idea on that... getting to cloud inversion season!

Thank you for mentioning Photo Ephemeris. I wil be using that!! I also use Google Earth (try it in VR, you can get an even better sense of how the shot will work out), to plan shots and checkout locations. My problem is, I cannot walk far - so I have to work out of the side of my van. So Google is brilliant because I can also use it to scout parking places to shoot from.

Stellarium is just brilliant! What more can I say???
