Metz Mecablitz 44 AF-1 - advice needed!!

Hi Folks.

As a beginner I would appreciate some advice on buying a first flash unit (on a budget!). I have no experience with using flash units. Primarily I will be using it for indoor family shots and the occasional event (casual family weddings etc.) I wasn't happy with a lot of the shots I got at a friends wedding recently using the on-board flash. Point is - i'm on a strict pre-Christmas budget of around the same price as a Metz 44. I have a K-50 and use the 18-135 wr and DA 35mm f/2.4 & 50mm 1.8. I don't need anything too elaborate...
Is the Metz my best bet in this price range (£100 or slightly more) or does anyone have any other suggestions? Budget can't stretch to a Pentax unit.....Is the Metz good value?

I have the Metz 44 AF1 and while I don't use a lot, it's always performed well for me when I use it. It's straightforward to use and has enough power for what I want.

Whether or not it's the best value in that price range - others may be better placed than me to express an opinion on that, as I got it as a present.

I have one of these. Like you I was on a restricted budget when I bought and I've not been disappointed.

It was my first external flash purchase. It works fine with PTTL. I like the simple controls and the features it offers, including manual control. I use it with a K-X and a K5 without problems.

I'd have no hesitation in recommending it in your circumstances.

I was in a similar situation as yourself, however i went for the metz 50 af-1. I dont use it as much as i thought i would, but it has always performed well.
If i was buying again, i would get the 44 af-1.

Another vote of confidence for the 44 (I have two), here.

Thanks for that everyone. It sounds like I won't be disappointed. I think I'll go for it - plenty of opportunity for practice in the next couple of weeks!!
