Metz 48 or 50

Posted 16/11/2010 - 17:30 Link
'Lo All

I'm thinking of making a foray into flash photography soon. My birthday and Christmas are coming up so it seems a good time. Until recently the Metz 48 was top of my wishlist. I'm not going to need a monster or anything too complicated, but was keen on a swivelling head. The Metz 48 seemed a no-brainer in terms of value for money.

However, the Metz 50 has now been released so I am looking at both. I can't really see much of a difference between the two. Am I missing something (I probably am...).

On SRS at the moment the 48 is £135 and the 50 is £195. Can anyone give me a good reason to pay the extra for the 50, or recommend a better alternative?

Cheers,

WG

A bit basic maybe, examine the features?

And then weigh it up for yourself and what YOU want

The Metz 50 is replacing the Metz 48, from what i could see there is no difference in feature however they might have change the interface a bit.
Try them out and get the one that works the best for you.

Metz 50 has a touch more power, the diffuser is better at wide angles, and it can now be triggered without the camera being set as a wireless controller.

If I hadn't already got the Metz 48, I know what I'd spend my money on!

Is that really useful?

It still needs a flash to trigger it and I believe you could already set the metz 48 to dumb-slave or not?

I've not looked into it closely as I can't afford to replace my 48 anyway, but my reading of it was that it is now able to filter out the pre-flash.

Chris that was my understanding as well but I fail to miss the point why that is handy.

The flash after all can do wireless P-TTL so why should you not use that but the "dumb" flash trigger instead, that's the point i'm missing.
It doesn't seem so useful

With Canon on the other hand I can see the use because only recently they are putting the wireless flash option in the camera.

Different uses... If you are experimenting with different lighting (Not everyone likes P-TTL, or going for a stylistic effect), or using manual aperture lenses (which don't support the use of P-TTL flash, at least not on my K10!) but still want to use red eye reduction.

Under those circumstances, the use of servo flash could well be useful!

But in those situation you describe you can still connect over P-TTL wireless or smart wireless or however you want to call it.
So if your flash and camera can connect in the smart why why would you still want to connect in the dumb way?

It might be useful if you also have a compact and you want to use a more powerful flash with that.
