metz 45 ct4

can anyone tell me if i can use my metz 45 ct4 with the pc socket on my k10s and k20 have read too many horror stories to take a chance

No!!!! The maximum voltage Pentax hint at applies to the PC socket as well.
Do you know the trigger voltage of the flashgun? It seems to be 24v link At least it's not 300v+ It's up to you it's still quite high. I use (on a 300v) gun a small flash fired at an old photocell, that was designed for high voltage. The small flash is fired from an RF-602 on the camera. link

The RF-602 can also be used the other way around to trigger your camera from 100m away. Well worth buying 2 sets.

A small photocell costs about a fiver... I'd rather risk frying that than the camera link

Where have you seen such a hint? And where does it say that the PC socket is on the same circuit as the hotshoe?

24V is certainly not high for a Pentax camera, although it has to be said that all Pentax's own flashguns use a much lower voltage.

Peter Elgar, who posts here sometimes, said that he used to use his MX with a high voltage studio flashgun for many years, and eventually the contacts burnt out. But that would have been several hundred volts, and many thousands of shots in a professional studio.

I used my old Bowens Monobloc (200V) for years with my Super A, Z1-P and *ist D with no ill effects, but I wasn't shooting as often as Mr Elgar.

Nowadays I have more modern kit, and if I do get the old Monobloc out I use it with a cheap Chinese slave trigger. Just in case!
