An upgrade to a K5 might be good, although I'm not sure it would solve your present dilemma Kris!
On first impressions I thought it may have been a housing of some sort, on account of the knurled knob on top?

My gradfathers pocket watch was inside a secondary silver case just like that. His was rather battered though having survived WW1
