ME Super Exposure Problems

I've got a ME Super that has plaguing me with underexposed shots for sometime now in the auto and manual modes. It's a random occurrence, as in the same photo session, some pictures will come out fine, others will be underexposed or just not there at all.

I've replaced the batteries the camera thinking it wasn't getting enough juice, but that did nothing to remedy the problem. I'm at a loss on why it isn't taking properly exposed pictures, and wonder if you guys have any insight and suggestions on what may be going on.

An additional insight on what may be going on. The LED's in the viewfinder sometimes flicker rather than display in their normal fashion.

I have had an ME-Super and an ME-F which both suffered from the same problem. It turned out to be the ISO/exposure dial on the left. Electronically it is like a volume control and when dirt and grime gets in there the connection becomes intermittent.

Try touching the ISO dial while looking through the viewfinder and seeing if the LEDs go wild.

I found that changing the ISO setting might clear it for a good while, but eventually it needs replacing by a service centre (you call www.asahiphoto.net if you're in the UK).

The other possibility is the lens not mating properly in the mount - maybe because of wear in the aperture coupling or the lens not fully clicking into place. I have had this same problem with the LX. No doubt there are other things that cause the same symptoms, maybe an intermittent shutter fault - the ME Super will deliver 1/2000 second if the batteries fail, so maybe faulty battery connections as well.

Thanks guys for the insight. It sounds like it could be a few different things going on, and my best bet would be to have someone take a look at it.

At this point I can arm myself with information when I do take it in...

I had the same thing happen. Cost me about $100US to fix. You need to decide if that's worth it, or if you should buy another body. The shutter went out a couple of years after I had the meter fixed, so definitely NOT worth it in my case.

If it might be the ISO setting dial, try giving it a workout by moving it to different positions lots of times. (But be gentle!) This technique works with the contacts on the Super A's timer, which is notorious for "sooting up".
