Maybe Not So Biased After All?

I've just finished my stint filling out questionnaires for Amateur Photographer and the thank you "goody bag" has dropped through the door, which was nice.

One item was a copy of "What Digital SLR?" and they have a very good review of the Km in there. The whole magazine seems very even handed and even the articles show a variety of lenses as examples, including Pentax, Samsung, Olympus and Sony as well as Canon and Nikon. Given that you have to show something it's a very unbiased effort throughout.

Here's a quote from the Km review: "Autofocus is as good as any of its peers, and focus is mostly accurate too."

The latest AP arrived today as well, and already there are signs that things are changing. Along with other things I have seen on the Web it looks to me as though Damien Demolder has taken on board the accusations of bias and actually tried to do something to redress that.

I hope they keep it up and we can take some comfort from knowing that things can change.

I stopped buying AP because it appeared to be a Canon "in-house" publication.

The camera press in general lost my interest when they voted the best anything over the last year as Canon or Nikon, forgetting all other brands.

What got me about the latest Ap was the 'best DSLR for £600' feature. All cameras got a fairly good review (K20 included) and the final conclusion was the pentax/samsung if liveview/video isnt required, otherwise the nikon just shaded the canon. All very well, but on the cover, under the strap line of 'Best DSLR for £600' is a picture of the Canon. no others in the shot, and to a casual observer glancing at the cover on a newstand it would appear to be a question and answer......

Fair point, although I'm referring to the new AP that arrives today for subscribers and is in the shops next Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if you think there's any improvement when you see it.

This is the sort of thing that puts me off!

I looked, saw canon, walked away not wanting to waste money on another canon publication!

I may pick up a copy tomorrow reading this.

Angela Nicholson is incapable of being objective in my view. If I do buy AP, I totally ignore any reviews, especially if she has done them.

I think I might have at least a glance, otherwise if and when things improved I wouldn't know!

18 months ago when I was looking at which camera to buy, the review of the K200D in What Digital SLR was effectively what swung it for me; IIRC it was a very comprehensive review that effectively stated that there was very little to choose between the K200 and the Nikon/Cannon equivalents. After that it was just a case of me not wanting to be a sheep
