I walked around Marrakesh earlier this year with a £4,000 camera and lens combination around my neck and never had the slightest problem or even hint of a problem.

Like anywhere, there can be problems, but I never had any.

I'd rather be walking round Marrakesh than Birmingham with my camera this week, that's for sure.

Get cast iron travel insurance, don't carry all your cash with you, and remember that it's better to just let go of your possessions than put up a fight, cos ultimately, they're replaceable.

Went earlier this year - fantastic place.

Had the camera on me most of the time and didn't feel worried. It's bustling(sp?) but friendly. Having said that I would make sure your insurance covers you.
You will only prise my 43Ltd from my cold, dead hands...

I'm envious. I'd feel safer in a place like that than anywhere in a British city

I have been to Marrakech on at least 10 occassions, and never had the slightest problem. You will get hassled by people trying to sell you stuff, or wanting to be your "guide", but a firm yet polite refusal will deal with that. Getting mugged there is probably less likely than in Manchester. There are some very adept pickpockets (mostly aged between 7 and 12 or so) in Jemaa el Fna, the square with snake-charmers, fortune tellers and lots of food stalls, but if you take the normal precautions you won't have any problem. I would however be careful about leaving valuables in your hotel room. Your hotel should have a safe.

I am actually going there next week, as my kids live there. When are you going? It's Ramadan until the end of the month, so if you are going before then, a lot of restaurants etc will be closed during the day, and the city comes to life at night, so take whatever fast lenses you have. Jemaa el Fna is an amazing sight at night whatever the time of year.
