marks on viewing screen

hi,
just got pentax ME super. Had some black specks on viewing screen so i used cotton wool bud to gently wipe off.The black foam was the culprit and has now come off completely and has possibly left sticky smudges on the screen, but i'm also not sure if the screen has got scratched in the process. When i tilt the mirror uptowards where the foam was,a sticky mark is left on it. Does the foam need to be replaced? Tried to wipe off the marks on the viewing screen with a couple of different soft cloths and a tiny tiny bit of lens cleaner but didn't work. Don't think a shot of air will work either. Looks really bad through the viewfinder and I'm not sure if this will show up on my images. Is it in need of a repair/replacement,or can it easily be cleaned? If so can I do it myself and what do I need? Or is it best to have done by a professional? I'd be very grateful for any advice given.

First thing, general advice is not to clean the focusing screen as this can cause damage to it. However, the good news is that any damage will not effect the final image in any way.

The foam sounds a bit like the mirror cushioning to dampen the mirror and its noise when it flicks up on taking a picture, though I can't say for sure. It may be necessary to replace the foam.

It may be a good idea to get the camera services anyway and this should include cleaning.

I have had trouble with the famous '1970's onward foam' - it was found to be faulty in that after 30 years it all deteriates, all cameras with that foam have trouble, not just Pentax. Also, I have several Paterson Contact printing frames with that foam- it has all gone rotten, also in a Canon lens case, the same thing- all bits came off stuck onto the lens, and my Multiblitz flash outfit case where you cut out the shapes for the flash heads----all rottted away to a sticky goo. My wife's Nikon FE2 mirror foam all gone too.

yeah i wish I'd left it alone now. My local camera shop said they could clean it for about 35quid if I wanted but I'm just glad the images won't be affected.

Thanks for the replies back guys.
