Marking Topics as read

When I log on to Pentax User, all new topics, or topics with new posts, are clearly shown with green squares and bold lettering. After opening/reading the posts, the green disappears and the lettering becomes normal.

Fine.

Half way through, I have to leave the computer for a while, so I log out (I never like to leave my computer logged on to anything).

Upon return, I log on again to continue reading, but now all messages unread at last visit have been cleared (marked as read). Only new posts since my logout are marked green and in bold lettering.

Surely, it would have been better that the read marking is done only when a message has been opened? I sent a report on the subject and the answer came today:

This feature was built to copy the way it worked in the past. It's one of the features that the majority of our members highly rely on.

We have noted your suggestion for an future upgrade.
Now I wonder how you feel about this. Should all messages be marked as read when logging out?
Best regards
Terry

No! I have the opposite problem. I never log out, I just quit Firefox or navigate to another page. Half the messages I have already read come back with green squares, but older messages I have missed are not always marked. I find the whole read/unread thing highly unreliable.

Best wishes, Kris.

I also noticed that (also use Firefox). It's even worse when you read forum on 2 PCs. Now I check that green/bold and date of the last post.

I have the same problem as you Kris and its a pain in the a$$

Also (after closing and re-opening) I have to log back in again about 30% of the time as it loses my saved password.
sometimes I can just click on one of the topic headers and it will log me back on but sometimes it doesn't. But I have learned to live with it.

If you have a problem, have you made a Report with all the details?

John,

As I stated in my first post, I did send a report. The answer is quoted in the post.

I don't have a problem as such. It's just more convenient that unread messages are still marked in bold when I return to the Forum.
Best regards
Terry

There were several reports of this lodged (not by myself) when the forum format changed, so i,m not sure if anything has been done about it.
As I said "I can live with it"

I'm aware of terde-I's report, but now the dust has settled if there is another perceived problem then do make a new Report and they get dealt with pretty quickly. The more details the easier it will be for IT to address the problems.

I reported these problems some time ago too.

The thing is, it's not a read/unread marker. Green squares with bold lettering mark a subject that's new since your last login, as I understand it. So it seems to be working exactly like it's supposed to.
Unfortunately, read/unread looks the same as new/old.

That was my understanding, but it doesn't work that way consistently.
I often get back the topics I have already read, with no new addition to the thread.

Possibly, what it really means is new topics or topics with new posts since your last login. At least, that is consistent with what I observe.

Personally, I would like to see that changed to a unread/read marker. As it is now, it's easy to miss entries of interest, just because I don't always have time to read all new messages in one session.
Best regards
Terry
