This has got a nicely well controlled exposure balance (better than other recent ones Alistair :wink - clean bright sky without blowout and the dark subject contrasts perfectly with that. Good detail also (see the grass) plus the sidelighting complements it all very well.

I see the shadow, I get that, but still think the women needs to be more off-centre.

I like it, but agree with Nigel re. the composition.

I agree with Nigel and Philip - nice subject and exposure but I'd probably consider a crop to 4:3 ratio and take it all off the right and lose a bit of sky (and along with it the aircraft contrail).

Cheers,

thanks for the honest feedback lads - i love the engaging comments - always learning.

However on this occasion I prefer the original image and thing the dead centre composition of the lady on the bench actually work especially with the contrail

Cheers!

I like the central composition of the lady - it works because the bench is off-centre and is balanced by the shadow being off centre in the other direction. The bit I have an issue with is the bottom - it needs some slight cropping there to position the bench on a horizontal third.

Thanks David.

Thats exactly the reason for centering the lady.

superb

It obviously performs pretty well stopped down then?

Presumably its pretty good wide open compared to the mediocre 28mm 2.8?

Please ignore the subject matter in this one Alistair, it's just a family snap taken with the K-x, but because it was quite poor light I took it wide open at F3.5, wrong aperture for this shot but look at the details on my mum's hair and face in the middle at the back:

I really like this image, and having spent ages mentally trying other crops prefer it just the way it is. K.

The shadow is a secondary element and doesn't carry enough weight ... the main subject is clearly centre with a uniform background - as such it presents the classic problem of such compositions - the eye fixes on the subject then wanders off in various circular, unfocused movements. For this reason I think you're wrong not to try crops in other proportions. But Alistair, its your shot, your choice
