The Pentax A*85mm f1.4 is one of the finest portrait lenses ever produced by Pentax, and it's quality is so good that it produces great results with extension tubes too.
These examples aren't perfect macro shots but do show what it is capable of....

1. Strawberry delight

2. Petunia peek-a-boo

Very impressive results. No 3 has a translucent quality, appearing to be backlit, whilst the strawberry is almost 3D.

I think this lens may have to go onto my wish list.

Love the softness and limited DOF of No.3. The 2nd image, it's like an alien rave!

A fine set. No. 1 evokes the smell, taste and texture of strawberry whenever I look at it. However, 2 and 3 have the edge as pictures, for me. I'm still trying to work out how the petunia was lit!

Wow - what great set, and clearly a very fine lens. (I think I want one!) No.2 is the one that stands out for me, but they all have that certain something.

Thanks for all the comments - no special lighting techniques on any of the shots, just some PP dropping the highlights and bringing out the shadows. Quite a few lenses are suitable for use with extension tubes but I like the 85mm partly because of its large aperture - rarely can you get a great image with it wide open, but the bokeh of shots such as the sweet pea tend to be nicer (to my eye) than with a dedicated macro lens (this shot was @ f2.5).

For those of you wanting one of these classic star lenses you'll find one for sale at LCE Colchester at present - but it has a high price tag at £699 (without hood) - for an extra grand you could buy a D FA*85

The petunia is a stunner, LennyB. I do like the peas also.
