I've just got myself a Manfrotto 330B which is actually quite versatile, though without the flexibility of Peter's setup:

That said, it's a reasonable price and I'm just using Slave mode Wireless flash using the inbuilt flash as the trigger and an AF360.
I've yet to try it in the field, but the setup works well on my monopod with a relatively small ball head and the 180mm.

Nice bit of kit, but it looks a bit bulky for crawling around in the long grass!................

That's not a problem for me, we don't have any long grass here in southern Spain. Nice bit of kit, but it looks a bit bulky for crawling around in the long grass!................
It's even bigger now I've fitted the extensions.

Fantastic setup, and what a great macro of a Mayfly. I wish I could get the same results with the Mayfly, but every time I try a shot like that I always end up with the critter either flying away or smashed by my grand son. LOL
There was not much science used in these shots. Hand held camera, find a subject, AF, and snap. A little cropping (a lot in the case of the last pic), lift the contrast a bit, sharpen a bit, and output.
