There is a story on slashdot.org about the fact that Apple is being sued over the displays in the MacBook and MacBook Pro.
Apple claims millions of colours but it seems that the panels they used are 6 bit panels thus only supporting 262.000 colours and they fake the rest through dithering.

So people doing colour critical work should watch out for these things... On another website there was a test on laptop displays and it seems that none of them come even close to a decent desktop TFT display.

I took my CRT out of retirement when I found out that my TFT was giving me false colours, this was a 6 bit TFT panel as well. I recently hooked up this TFT again when I bought a Eye-One Display 2 but even after calibrating the thing it was still pretty terrible, the delta-E was on average well above 4 so within the range that is visible to us...

It's hard to beat a good CRT. I find most flat screens way too contrasty and really a bit uncomfortable to view.

Inevitably we will end up with them, but not yet.

When I first got my *istD I was really quite disappointed by the level of colour noise. Then I hooked a CRT up to my powerbook, and it was like having a whole new camera.

My macbook display is gorgeous.
Somebody had to crack one open, to find out the manufaturers model to find out...not exactly an obvious flaw, doubtful i could see the difference.
still, I know that laptops are not ideal for critical work.
I still find my Imac or Emac displays to be most acuurate. any field editing on critical work should be done in an adjustment layer, and saved as a psd, to be tweeked (if nescessary) at the desktop computers at home.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

I use a 6-bit dithering display and the colour reproduction isn't that bad once calibrated. Can't get 8-bit 1920x1200 17" displays at the moment unfortunately. I have a CRT as well, but that isn't calibrated and sucks more power than my notebook at full pelt.
