The new MacBook Airs with SSDs look very good, but as a high-end netbook alternative. I wouldn't want to process any photos on one! Screen is too small, and it'll be a bit slow at CPU-intensive stuff.
On the other hand if you just want to do netbook things like email and the web, then it'll be very good, plus very responsive boot and wake-up times and good standby time and battery life.
If you're talking about a laptop for the kids then I'd go for a normal Macbook with a normal HD, rather than the Air with SSD. The polycarbonate shell would probably be better for kids.

Wait for Stefan
I use 2 MacBook Pros , one goes away on holidays with me . Both are backed up to Desktop External Drives.
I've never used a PC - indeed I have a friend who , using Logmein , ensures that my husband's PC Lappy is kept up to date re patches etc , for my elder Daughter to use when she visits . I have tried to use the PC , but I just don't get on with it at all
Both my MBPs have conventional HardDrives .

Thanks Tim, I'm actually looking at the Mac Book Pro's with i7 cpu. The Apple stores have options of SSHD and extra RAM as well as Hi res screens. I'm looking for user/owner advice if possible.

One snag with the metal unibody MBPs - more difficult to get in and upgrade the RAM - I'll grant you the plastic bodied MacBook were easier to upgrade your own Memory

I'm not exactly sure of the procedure for adding ram to the new MBPs, but my older Core Duo one you just undo two tabs and lift up the keyboard to access the RAM slots. Takes all of a minute or so.
I would definitely avoid buying RAM from Apple if at all possible, they charge you at least double what Crucial would.
Edit: adding RAM to the new ones doesn't look too bad: link

PS Personally I wouldn't bother with the SSD. You are paying more for it, but I've heard there isn't much of a speed increase apart from at boot time. The SSD is supposedly more reliable than a HD due to lack of moving parts but I don't know by how much. Not a huge amount I would expect. Better resistance to dropping too, but hopefully you won't be doing that anyway

Since you're going from a PC to Mac also count the cost off upgrading your software to Mac versions. Some do it for free, others for a small fee or not and others don't even have a Mac version.

If you're going to work outdoors a lot then also get the matte screen, even those are still somewhat reflective though but the normal ones are like mirrors almost.
SSD vs HHD
SSD is faster but they do slow down over time when they get fuller so for now it would be great to use them as the main drive for Mac/Windows and all the programs but keep your files stored on a HHD.
I don't know if you've the option to put two disks in the 17" MBP?

I have several recent PC's back in the UK that were brought back from the Gulf. All sat wrapped up with the HD's removed. No good for travelling. Currently using an Acer Ferrari that is maxed out on Ram and has had two HD upgrades. Running XP etc. The other family machines are running Vista and are not stable?
I like the look of the Mac OS and it is supposed to be bullet proof?

Errr - My MBPs do not have a battery hatch - you would need to remove the WHOLE of the back to get at the memory and then there are the 10 teeny wee cross headed screws - Nightmare time .

Can't comment on stability off the Mac but every OS have their problems and Mac isn't an exception.
And please don't be blind and think you're safe for maliciousness software and hackers because you've a Mac.
Currently because there are more windows PC it's far more interesting to attack them but Mac is becoming popular and big companies like Google are starting to use them more, if this trend continues this won't be a reason to get a Mac anymore.
Mac has more holes then Windows 7 does and also the security is better in Windows because they have to, Mac has copied some measured over from Windows but only half way making them less effective. link

I thought that was part of the pleasure of buying Apple stuff.... paying double for everything ...unless you buy it from "I Saw You Coming" and pay TRIPLE!

Family decision coming up. Stay with Acer's or all jump ship to Macs.
What's the feeling out there? SSHD or conventional?
