M42 adapter

Hi,

Just bought my first Super-Takumar, a 28 3.5, but don't have an M42 adapter to use it. The official Pentax ones seem very expensive and like they should be easy to replicate, has anyone got experience of the cheap alternatives available on ebay, or a particular supplier they would recommend?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Sam.

It's down to the individual really. There's no doubt in my mind that the Pentax one is better made, fits properly and doesn't shed its chrome finish.

Others may or may not be as good.

Whatever you do, get an adapter that fits flush with the mount. Thise that project outwards won't allow infinity focus.
Best regards, John

I only use the Pentax one and couldn't be happier, as my initial experience was having a third party adapter stuck on the camera and needing a repair technician to remove it. I have two as I wanted a second one since they're no longer made. A good condition used one should cost around 30GBP.

I understand that cheaper ones can be hit and miss and that there are two types, one of which does not allow focus to infinity. I read recntly about an engineering company, in the UK I think, that makes good quality M42 adapters (amongst other things) and sells them new for 20 to 30 GBP. I'm afraid I don't seem to have noted the company name, but maybe someone else here can point you in the right direction.

Pentax Adapter K is still listed actively by SRS and others. £64.95 I think.

I went for this one in the end:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290782210770?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1...

It arrived today and works fine, can be removed easily with the supplied tool. Delighted with the lens, haven't really had a chance to put it through it's paces, but early shots show how sharp it is.

Non-Genuine ones have been perfectly fine for me, no issues at all. They fit tight (if correctly fitted) and only cost £7 each.

I have to say John that I think £64.95 is a ridiculous price to pay for a simple metal ring when you can get one that does exactly the same job for £7. I have purchased and regularly use 6 or 7 of these and they have been perfect.

I have Pentax version and a non-genuine version. On the NGV I removed the little screw-on attachment to be on the safe side. Still works fine but some users (in the past, probably several years ago??) found that the adapter could jam and not be removable. Good luck.
