Has it accidentally come off the 'A' setting?
Mind, I'm just presuming it is an 'A' lens - you haven't said what lens it is or if it had been working OK and just gone wrong or if you have recently acquired it and it has never worked!

If it's an Adaptall 2 mount you may need to clean the electrical contacts on the lens and the actual mount itself as that too is used as an electrical contact.

Well, not Adaptall but still worth seeing if cleaning the contacts helps. Presume other lenses are OK?this is a tamron AFaspherical LD[if] 28 -300mm macro

Is the lens a little loose when mounted on the camera? That may account for the intermittent contact. If you've not had the lens long consider returning it to the supplier as possibly faulty.
