London's Statues & Monuments #2

This is another one for the project, and in this one I wanted to show a sense of scale and space. I liked the sculptural quality of the gardens plants, too.
Looking at this photo and the detail in it I do wish I could afford the Pentax 645D for this project.

Great shot, love the B&W conversion. Which lens did you use?

Here is a link to a book: link

I know the author and although the photography isn't as inspired as yours it shows that there would clearly be a market for something similar.

How does he feel about Google Books? Just asking because of this lawsuit that's kicking off now thanks to the US Media Photog Society.

Ken,

You'd have seen the train sculpture at page xiv of that book - what a ripper! It's a shame about the wire netting to the sides of the 'locomotive', keeping out birds probably.

Thanks, guys.

Colin, I used the 21mm prime lens for both of the shots i've posted on here, so I have squeezed out a little quality in using this kind of lens, I guess. I have to say its a fantastic lens and i've had it bolted to my camera, it is so practical.

Ken, thanks for the link. I really like those sculptures in the botanic house, I would really like to photograph them and/ in they're surrounds.
I'm inspired by Lee Friedlander's monument images (and his style, as always), and Joel Meyerowitz photographs of NY parks and wondered if I could do something the same with London's statuary and such. London is almost buried under statues and monuments like this, I am surprised I haven't come across any other notable photographer's work on this subject. I'm still searching though.

i-berg, I wonder if I could get funding by the powers that be, and buy that Pentax 645D!! There is no harm in asking I guess, armed with some preliminary images. Jus' a thought!

I went to Joel's exhibition in NYC. The massive prints on tyvek were stunning. I wasn't surprised to find he used a 5x4 view camera for them. Curiously, APs review of the book didn't mention it was an exhibition catalogue and failed to mention that Joel had used LF to take the photos.

Best wishes, Kris.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Kris, i'm glad you saw them and i'm happy you reported this. Great to hear.

This is a fine picture Pauly. I bet the more you use that lovely lens, the more you'll appreciate its qualities.

If anyone can pull off this project you can. It would be all too easy for it to degenerate into a "Come to Lovely London!" collection.

Andrew

Your quite right, Andrew. For me, with some of the statuary that is on display it's all about they're space, scale and environs. I don't wish to photograph any statuary on its own either, those kind of photographs all belong in guidebooks I feel.
