London exhibitions

I can thoroughly recommend two (free) exhibitions I visited when in London recently, both (handily) at Somerset House. This: link, which someone posted a thread on last year (which I can't find now); and this: link. The former has fantastic images by some top street photographers (including one of the colour genres' Daddies, Joel Meyerowitz) - the Alex Webb's in particular were a relevation; was less enthused by a couple of togs taking a more conceptual approach. Tim Walker is to fashion photography what Tim Burton is to film and his exhibition was impressive too and a lot of fun (great for kids - my daughter loved it). In addition, the venue (Somerset House) is a superb example of grand London architecture.

The Ansel Adams at Greenwich is good too, but you have to pay for that!

Yes, I read a report in "The Times" of the exhibition at Somerset House where the custodian of the exhibition was of the opinion that Bresson did not understand colour.

That killed this one then.

I can't recall seeing a Cartier-Bresson photo in colour. He wasn't bad at black and white.

Actually, the premise behind the exhibition worked (it's over now, I think) very well. There were a handful of HCB photos (in b'n'w) to give an idea of aspects of his work that colour togs might have drawn inspiration from - and this was quite apparent in some of the selected photos (eg. Leiter, Meyerowitz) but less so in others.

Considering that his heyday was in the days when B&W was the norm (I know colour started to creep in during WW2, but was not overwhelmingly popular) may well go some way in explaining why there are no (or very, very few) colour photographs.
