Hi Guys

After the clouds made Llyn Crafnant less attractive we drove over to Llyn Ogwen then walked up to Llyn Idwal, not a great cloud day but I tried to make the best of what was before us

Without cheating (exif info is what I mean) can anyone spot the one taken with the K10D and 18-55WR, the others were the K5/ Vivitar 28mm combination:

As always C&C welcome.

Love the first shot, very nicely done.

As for the lenses, last one from the 18-55? It's got the nicest colour rendition I think but not as sharp.

Thanks Guys

Yes the last one is the K10 with the 18-55wr - the sharpness difference is a lot more obvious at pixel level but not a bad performer for a kit lens (as it is renowned to be) as mentioned more pleasing with the colours but the vivitar was originally purchased around 1982 - not by me the original receipt was with it when I bought it so not a bad result for that either

I plan to visit similar ares over the coming weeks (at weekends) if the cold snap persists

Thanks again for the comments peeps

Cheers

I don't have your Vivitar lens myself but the results remind me of some I get from an old Tamron or two of mine i.e. lovely and sharp but with purple fringing around contrast edges - I think I see this in your shots even without pixel peeping. Maybe it's just me that has become overly sensitive to the point of hate on this but I have found solutions.

If you get purple fringing in most pictures I understand the probable cause would be a lens distortion type that some of the raw processing programs can automatically correct. If, like me, you are unlucky/unlucky and it just appears with high contrast and particularly overexposed edges it's probably not a lens distortion that can be auto-corrected but I instead get huge improvements with what I call my 'purple notch filter'. Essentially I go to the colour curves in HSV mode curve, sample a purple fringe and then put a brickwall type notch at that hue. I'm using 'darktable' for this processing but I assume that if you fancy trying the same most capable editing progs are able to do the equivalent operation these days.

Rob.

Hi Stu,

Great day for reflections, thought your luck might be in. Think I'd pick 2 as a favourite for the colours.

Just a thought but how about cropping the sky and foreground completely on the 3rd shot so it's a pure "detail" photo?

Ticking off the days until we can go up there again, Stu. Not bothered what camera/lens combination is used when you can produce results like these. I usually like to include some of those great rocks in the foreground of Idwal and I love the view of Tryfan from the other side of the lake.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Good call. I nearly suggested this as well after spending a happy couple of minutes holding sheets of paper up to the screen to see how it would look .

Thank you all for your comments

Rob, the Vivitar fringes very little and needed minimal help here (in only one of the shots) - the kit lens had blue/cyan fringing to a much higher but not objectionable amount, this was more tricky and that took a little more care to remove

Simon, I tried this but really liked showing the top of the mountain yet minimal sky - I also have other compositions like this but I didn't like them - just my taste - probably best I follow your advice - I will give it a go

Hi Andrew, I have more with the foreground etc that I have not looked at properley but will soon - just as we decided to wander around the other side it started snowing

Thanks again for all the comments they are appreciated

Cheers
