thanks Matt
Offcourse I allready did some googeling, but I didn't find them all. I have something to do tonight...
I'll keep posting my findings here.
As a update I'll post my system specs (only the important bits for this application).
OS: ArchLinux 0.7.2 with all the latest updates until june 11th.
GFX Card: ATI Radeon 9700Pro (made by Sapphire)
TFT: Hyundai ImageQuest L17T (I know, probably not the best for this work)

Colour management and monitor setup are tricky on Linux as few manufacturers support it directly but with persistence is is possible to live without Micro$oft
Have a look at Argyll ( http://www.argyllcms.com/ ) and LittleCMS( http://www.littlecms.com/ ).
For monitors check out http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html
and
http://www.pcbypaul.com/software/monica.html
You should also look at CinePaint ( http://www.cinepaint.org/ ) This is undergoing a major rewrite at the moment and the current stable build is a bit out of date. It can handle 16bit images and ICC profiles, something lacking from the Gimp.
Hope this helps

I've been reading up on cinepaint as well and must say it's impressive and promising.....I'm giving serious thought to building a linux box for video storage, and because I've always wanted build a kick a$$ system myself.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Since I am allmost at the point to discard Windows and switch to Linux completely I am wondering how the people who are using Linux here are handling the issues with colour rendition for their monitors and especially with TFT screens.
For image editing, PS runs with Wine. Disney runs it that way and has contributed quite a lot to get it working.
I am going to try to see if C1 works as well with Wine.
I am starting to dislike MS more than ever, not because of stability issues, XP runs stable enough for me and I did not have major issues in the last 3 years with it.
Colour management and monitor profiling are the only things that keep me from switching to linux completely at the moment. My girfriend has just finished writing her thesis so Office is out of the way as well in favour of OpenOffice.
