Lindisfarne

Haven't managed to get out much lately. Was happy to head to Lindisfarne this morning. Unfortunately, although I turned up for sunrise, the sun didn't bother.

It gave a peek through the clouds just after 10am

It was clearly well worth waiting around for! That's a spectacular natural lighting effect and the way the backlit boat glistens is beautiful. I'm assuming we're not seeing a single exposure, or is it just the effect of an ND grad? In any case the brightness is all perfectly balanced.

The obvious point of discussion is the composition, with the unusually central sun highlight, and the boat looking a little squeezed over to the left ... But I'm guessing you wanted the extra small details in the distant far right, for more balance, or a sense of space ... I wonder if its needed and you could crop to square , or even a fully vertical shot removing the area to the right of the sun altogether? I appreciate the chain shape, but wonder if it being cut at the edge would matter?

Thanks Nigel

HDR. And then grads across the sky, and a lifting of shadows on the hull of the boat

Considered the options suggested. For me though, the chain is key

I've got a couple more from the morning, slightly different. Will share when I process them.

And the final one. Should have posted these altogether but I didn't think I would get time to edit all three. I've had to dip into photoshop, and I'm useless with it

All very good Alan.

What lens?

p.s. were you really there to dig up lug or rag worm?

Best regards

I like all three which were taken under difficult circumstances. How well you handle the sun in the frame. I can see what you're trying to do with each shot, compositionally. You could crop and change them but the results would be different not necessarily better. Monochrome conversions would make them more sombre and moody but I'd still do it. You must have used a very good lens with perfect coating.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Still reeling from your excellent red squirrels Alan, so it seems churlish to make cropping suggestions to a proper artist!
16X9ish to loose a bit of the empty foreground but not the sweep of the sand in 2 and 1 maybe to accentuate the curve of the chain, make it more important? However I do like the sense of space...
Belting shots whatever, I never get over there these days...Sigh

The expert use of light makes this set standout for me, its so expertly controlled and gives the images a wonderful glow. You can almost feel the chill of the North Sea just by looking at the pictures. It was well worth your early morning trip up the coast Alan.

These are all superb. Composition and processing are all top-notch. I wonder how many folks would have given up and gone home ? Perseverence was key here !

Hi Alan,

That's an excellent set.

Many of us will have stood at very same spot, on holiday, at the wrong time of day, family wanting to move on, dog tugging at lead We've ended up taking a 'snap' and going home with just your sort of images in our heads but not in our cameras.

Very motivating. Thank you.
