I have seen in various topics and posts, a reference to version 1 or version 2 etc. of a particular lens. How do you find out which version of lens you have?

If you mean the standard 18-55 then the version is around the objective bezel.

That is look at the lens end where it says 18-55. f3.5-... and at the end will be the version.

II means mark2, L means light weight, this one also has a plastic mount and WR which is the weather proof one.

As far as I can remember.

If you're talking about the older lenses (eg the two versions of the Pentax-M 80-200mm f4.5) then Bojidar Dimitrov's K mount site is the place to look. He has photos of most lenses so you should be able to match yours that way.
