It is not that the camera does not recognise the lens but that Lightroom does not recognise the EXIF tag corresponding to this lens (7 203). Can't you just use the SMC DA55-300 profile ?
Is there a way I can fix this, or does it need Pentax to correct this in firmware?

Thanks for the quick answer and that pointer to the detailed EXIF resource!

Very strange ?
I think its just that DNG is a defined format that Pentax have to stick to, so once a software product supports DNG files or a particular type they in theory support them for ever. PEFS are proprietary and can change from camera to camera so each time there is a new model how quickly programs get to support those images depends on how important they think us Pentax users are, and their resources to identify and adapt to the format change.I'm using Aperture as well, if I use PEF the lens is unknown, but if I use DNG the lens does show up.
Very strange ?
The benefits of standards (even mediocre ones)

I have recently bought a K-3 with 18-135mm, 100mm macro and WR 55-300mm lenses. The first two are automatically recognised by the K-3 as their details are supplied in the EXIF details of photographs in which they are used. But the 55-300mm (HD PENTAX-DA 55-300 mm F4-5.8ED WR) isn't. This is annoying in general, but specifically it means that applying lens correction in Lightroom is more difficult.
Is there a way I can fix this, or does it need Pentax to correct this in firmware?
Many thanks,
Richard
