Lens not focusing

I think I had a similar experience with the same lens.
When it refuses to focus is the f stop displayed in the viewfinder? I found that sometimes if I zoomed the lens, it lost communication with the body. I think it was in the same focal length range you quoted.
Fortunately, mine was still under guarantee, so I returned it to SRS. It went off to Tamron's agents for a service and worked perfectly on its return. Cause not reported.

I've had a couple of lenses lose contact and "F--" shows up on the display. Both times it's been an accumulation of muck on the contacts and mount. A wipe clean has fixed it

I have a tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens.
It's failing to take focus intermittently between 17mm and 35mm.
Sometimes works, sometimes beeps and won't take the photo. If I have center focus on it still shows the focus is not centered. I've tested on k7 and k5ii and get some issue. Other lenses work fine.
What's causing this please?
Thanks,
Pa
II'm shooting a wedding tomorrow but have enough other lenses to cover me.
