As the hood does'nt have much depth, does it really need one.
Is there a better alternative ?.

The hood for the 20-40mm is very shallow so it can't do much for IQ but, as always with a hood, is certainly worth having for physical protection of the front element. Microglobe have it in stock: https://www.microglobe.co.uk/pentax-mh-ra55-lens-hood-for-hd-da-20-40mm-f28-4-li...

The correct hood is Pentax MH-RA55. I've found a used one on Ebay, the conditions not brilliant but I could tart it up a bit.
My question is does it have to the correct overall size. I would prefer an original one, but if there is a good third party one then fine. I can't seem to find one on the Pentax web site.
