Lens for Street Photography

I'm looking around for a wide angle prime lens to use on my K-7 for Street Photography. Something around the old 28mm film camera lens (say 18mm on the K-7).

Compact, preferably not too slow & doesn't have to be auto focus but auto metering would be handy. I've considered the DA 21mm f3.2 & the DA 15mm f4. The DA21 is a bit "long" & the reviews on the DA15 aren't that complimentary needing f8 or f11 to produce good quality images which is disappointing given the price of the lens.

A K 15mm f3.5 came up on ebay but I quickly ruled it out due to weight & size - I'm looking for something unobtrusive & that is where the DA15 shines. So I've started wondering about non Pentax offerings - I seem to remember reading a list of alternatives to the DA15 somewhere but do you think I can remember where.........

I would be grateful if anyone has some suggestions.

Pentax DA 14mm/2.8 - My preferred lens for wide anglestreet stuff.

Although the DA 10-17 is a cracker too, but it's not a prime

f8 or f11 ???? - I find that very hard, no extremely hard, to believe.

I have NEVER come across a lens that won't produce good quality images without being stopped down to f8 to f11. Where are you reading these reviews? www.retardedglassreviews.com

OK, sorry I forgot to read 'compact' - DA 14mm/2.8 might be a little large for you.

Get the DA15.

Forget reviews, they are by and large nonsense when it comes to image quality.

Much better to actually look at photos taken with a lens ....

Pentax DA 15mm/F/4.0 pics

Some lovely street pics taken at all sorts of F stops there.

da15 produces great results even wide open, no worries.
but there is nothing 'not to slow', compact and reasonably priced in that segment. maybe da21 is the closest match, or manual focus 20mm?
i use old manual focus 24/2.8. a bit narrower but very good results. and not hard to find 24/2 if you want faster.

As a street lens I'd say that the narrower DA21 is a much more versatile option, and it's also more discreet. The DA15 is a nice lens and the focal length offers interesting possibilities, but IMO the 21 offers more possibilities.

In fact I'd also consider a longer FL such as a 28 or 35. I've got a FA35 f2, which is also discreet and significantly faster enabling faster shutter speeds that are often crucial. It's probably optically superior too, though this is of course subjective.

I've thought about the DA 14/2.8 - it's fast but a bit bigger than I would like, not to mention even more expensive than the DA 15/4.

The DA 21 is longer than I really want but have considered it. I already have an FA 31/1.8 Ltd.

Perhaps I should think about the DA 21 again - would love to try one.
I love my FA 31 Ltd & it's great in low light but I'm looking for a significant step wider than 31mm so yes the 21 is a possibility although on the K-7 it is roughly equivalent to 33mm on film camera where I was looking for nearer 28mm equivalent or a bit wider.

I guess as you have the 31 you're perhaps inclining to something wider. But the difference between 21 & 31 is still great.

You obviously know your needs, wadna, but 15 is a far from obvious FL for street photography. The 21 on aps-c is, on the other hand, a classic street FL.

I'm running a survey on PF link similar to the one I ran here (results) : link

On PF I've had over a 100 responses and to date the DA15 is the 2nd most used lense to the variants of 50/1.4s. If I broke those down into their various constituent lenses then the DA15 is THE most used lenses by Pentax users on PF. I think that tells you all you need to know about the lense. Buy it.

Yes, thanks, but it's nearer to 35mm equivalent than 28mm equivalent. And, yeah, I know, Cartier Bresson used a 35mm lens on his Leica. At least I think he did.
However I would love to try the 21mm.
