There were three main issues with these type of things when they first came out some years ago. First is light output - far too low on early models - likely much better now as some very powerful LED's are available. Second issue was colour temperature of the LED's - not sure how good/consistent they are or indeed suitable for photography? Third issue was "hotspots" caused but poor diffusers. Cost of linked item is pretty good so I think you should buy one and test it for us Bernard ...

I'd be happy to do the same but there's the inevitable problem of packaging. Most of my homebrew electronics suffers this way- works absolutely fine but looks yuk and mounting is iffy.

I did try a parasol lamp from Poundland which wasn't too bad, but I admit, a bit dim for the job I wanted it for. It eventually broke as it wasn't intended to be used opened into a "C" shape

I have a lot of ideas on that kind of thing; there's another problem, and that's heat. I figure 100mm dia should be fine - there's no problem with getting some aluminim cut for the baseplate and then the question is diffusion - which should be doable with some frosted Lexan.

Maybe even cheat and use some long M4 screws through from the lexan to the base plate - with threaded holes in the alu.

I'm not sure direct LED illumination is such a good idea. I think maybe half a Toroidal reflector + diffuser would be better?
