Hi. Maybe a silly question. I am editing a musical concert in audacity but find that the laptop mike is active and the slightest noise is adding to the music.
Cannot find anywhere in audacity to close the mike. Is there a method of closing the laptop mike? or, where is the mike situated on my dell laptop and can I cover this with tape to cure my problem?

regards Thoramay.

If you double-click on the Volume Control in Systray (right on the Taskbar), a mixer panel will appear, where you can mute the Microphone input
Best regards

Terry. Thanks for your response. I am confused!! What is Systray? Is this in windows or in audacity, please. Cannot locate this in either. Sorry!! I am not good with computers. Any further explanation would be helpful.

In Audacity, under the input meter there is a microphone symbol with a selector tab along side. Click this and the last option is disable

Terje-1 is refering to the blue bar alongside the clock in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
There is likely to be a loudspeaker symbol, which when right clicked opens a panel with sliders on it. Here you can mute the microphone.

I am assuming you are using Windows XP for the above - there may be variations for other operating systems

In my copy of audacity, under the blue line in the centre of the screen there is an input and output meter with a mike symbol between these two. clicking on the mike symbol does nothing. I have just downloaded the latest version of audacity. I think there is an issue on this with closing the mike.
I am using the latest windows version, not XP. I cannot see a clock symbol here.

Right click on the speaker symbol - you will be given the option of recording devices - click on that - choose the mike in question, double click it, and then check do not use this device, to turn it off.

The system tray is the bar at the bottom of your screen, below any application windows. The rightmost Icon shows the time/clock.

Somewhere to the left of that is a loudspeaker icon. Right click on it, select recording devices. In the next window, right click microphone (mic, not mike) and select disable.

Follow the same procedure to enable it when needed.

The system tray may not appear if you have it set to auto-hide, or it is not forced to stay on top of other windows.

In either case, close all application windows, move your mouse cursor to the very bottom of the screen to show the system tray, then right click on it and select properties where you can change these behaviour properties.

I am confused by your decription

My Audacity is V1.2.6 and has the following layout (I've never found a way of altering it so I guess this is the standard) which shows where the pull down tab besides the microphone symbol
Also shown down in the right hand corner is the clock and loudspeaker symbol refered to previously

I hope this helps

Thank you good people. Now done. I need to remember that the right button activates other functions. I was using the left button and getting nowhere..Pathetic, I know!
My better half is away at the moment who is the techno person.
Again. Many thanks.

Not good news, I'm afraid. I cannot now record to audacity. It tells me that a change has been made and media player cannot work!! I have tried to reverse the change but it locks up the computer. I am stuck now.
Bernard. My version is different to yours. The pull down does not actuate. I believe there is some problem here and it has been noted on the forums.

When I play music from my files it works but go to audacity and try to record it stops the music and I get the message that this change has been made.

What change(s) have you made since it was last working correctly (ignore for the moment that the laptop microphone was active)

When did you download the latest version of Audacity as 1.2.6 appears to be the latest "good" version - There is a later Beta version which may have bugs in it.

As far as I know Media Player is not connected in any way to Audacity - so puzzled on that part
