kr focusing

Hi, you might remember I posted on here a while ago about the kr front focusing, well I did send that back and, not being able to afford the k5 decided to give something else a try. I bought a canon 550d yesterday and that is front focusing even worse than the kr! and not just in tungsten light either. I did several tests with several lenses and its definately way out. I have since read quite a few things about the 550d focus problems so it's obviously an issue in some of these cameras too. I am intending to return it later today and my question is: would it be worth giving the kr another try? how common is the f/f issue, and how likely am I to get another bad copy? (last time even taking the fine adjustment all the way to -10 wasn't quite enough) how many of you who own the kr have had problems? At least with the kr there is some fine adjustment on camera I suppose, unlike the canon. I thought having the chance to buy new was going to make things so easy! I wish I had the cash to buy secondhand again, to be honest! Thanks, jacqui.

Hi Jacqui I have the k-r and have never had any problems with ff using kit 18-55 or da 50-200 even in mixed lighting. The only lens ive had a problem with in regard to ff/bf is the fa 50mm 1.7. Despite spending ages with it and playing with focus adjustment have resigned myself to selling as I get better results focus wise with my kit lens! Hope this helps I would urge you to give kr another go some variance in body/lens is normal though should not usual be visible in the majority of shots. Can only presume that your last issue was pretty major? Good luck Dan

Give the K-r another chance whilst prices are still good.

If you get a fault, get it seen to under warranty or if the time scale is short enough get it exchanged. Buy from SRS to ensure good after sales attention.

Another thing to beware of is expecting to see an error. I'm not saying you would, but just making the point that being over anxious about the possibility of something being wrong can make us over critical, especially when we can magnify our images so much on the PC.

Good technique is the first thing to tackle, not checking focus charts.
Best regards, John

Hi, thanks for your replies, Yes I think I will give it another try, Ive always preferred pentax cameras so I think its worth another try. Yes I agree John about being over anxious about a fault, I never used to do focus checks or anything, but after buying these cameras with problems you tend to look for them more. I have to go to pc world to get it as I got finance on the canon and that's going back to them later this afternoon so I will have to get an exchange, hopefully. If I could have paid cash I would definately have gone to srs. Still, never mind, maybe next time. I should be able to try it out tonight, so, wish me luck jacqui.

When I got my K5, the next weekend I set up a focusing test chart. Adjusted my 3 most used lenses. All required adjusting. Went had a cup of coffe. When I came back I checked and adjusted again. All three required adjusting again. Back to zero

For what it is worth - I have never had any issue with my Kr or K5 noticably front focussing

Definately worth another go I would say - and IMHO the Kr is such a good little camera - even if I were unlucky enough to get another with a problem - I would keep going until I got one without

No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more

Front/Back focussing is not uncommon. as we now have the ability to look closer at our pictures we are more aware of than in the days of film. take a look at this article it may help.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies, and the link Steve I did get the kr yesterday, it was cheaper than the canon too £449 for twin lens kit so I had to make up the money by choosing some more stuff, (because it was on finance) so I now have a kindle which I have wanted for ages too! Although found out after that I made a bit of a mistake there, as it's what my daughter had planned to get me for Christmas so felt pretty bad about that. Tried the camera out a bit last night (in tungsten light) and adjusted the fine focus a bit, about -4 I think but it's looking good. Haven't had much of a chance to try it outside yet, but will do that today. Its incredible the amount of features on this compared to the canons! I think I was playing until about 3am!

Yes, good idea, I didn't want her to spend that much anyway, Its her first year of working, in a camera shop would you believe, and she wants to spoil us all I think bless her. Im sure she will think of something
By the way an update on the camera, had a bit more time to try it out today and very happy, miserable dull day though so not great for photo taking but hopefully should get a sunny spell or two this week sometime
