Kr- To RAW or to JPEG!?

I bought a K-x and then a K-r (after I broke the K-x). Basically, I shot RAW from day 1. Then, on a couple of occasions, I needed to shoot jpg. I was sort of struck with how I had less cope for editing. Whether this resulted in striking differences in the final result I don't really know, but I prefer to shoot RAW.

I'm in a pickle as I don't want to splash out on a RAW editor if JPEG is perfectly adequate!

If you bought the K-r new or if it was boxed there should be a raw editor in the box on cd silkypics or pduc4

Well, Mac, I can't tell you if jpeg is adequate for you or not. I use an old version of Lightroom, v3.6, which you may be able to pick up very cheaply.....don't know, to be honest.
You may have less headroom with a K-r than, say, a K-5, but for me anyway, it's still worth it.

Geordie01 beat me to it; I'm thinking that there should have been a copy of PDCU(4?) in the box; it's what I use with my K-5. It's very good as a RAW processor - the output quality is marvellous - and if you need more tools than PDCU offers (curves, levels, clone/heal) then just export as TIFF 16-bit and do the rest in Photoshop. RAW's the option if you want processing headroom, as the K-r's 12-bit RAW files will give much better flexibility than the 8-bit JPEGs.

I am impressed with Aftershot pro.
Just a shame that I bought PSP X5 from a shop when I could have had an 80% discount from the Corel website on ASP if I had bought X5 online!

Shoot both (raw + jpg) after you have set RAW to DNG.
PSE10 or 11 will open both.
As soon as you have edited a RAW it is saved as a jpg (but I have known PSE10 save an altered RAW file) - RTFM.
You can now do all the other editing you want in PSE and save the file as one of the loss-less type (TIFF, PSD, etc). Go back and change it as much as you like, just don't turn it into a jpg until you need to.
Lightroom is good when you need to make the same corrections to a batch of images.

I think the complaints about headroom in K-r raw files is probably compared to other cameras, any raw file is going to have loads more scope for editing than any JPEG because there is simply more information in it.
And for what it's worth, I'm a big fan of Lightroom because it makes it very easy to organise and edit lots of images.

I have a Kr. I normally shoot in JPEG but thought I'd have a go at RAW.
Downloaded free trial of LR4 and was impressed with the control.
I then bought PSP X5 and am very impressed with the power of the editing.
My dilemma is that reviews of the Kr suggest that there is little 'headroom' in the Kr's RAW processing. I have a free trial of Aftershot pro which I am also impressed with but is there any poiny at shooting RAW on the Kr if the JPEG engine is so good?
I welcome your thoughts based upon your experiences!
