Thanks Algi, the kookaburra is a member of the kingfisher family

The Kookaburra is the largest of the Kingfisher family, almost the size of a crow but with a larger head and beak. They have a raucous 'laugh' which is very loud, especially on dusk. I once had Canadian friends staying with me, and on hearing this loud calling in the night, they exclaimed "It's just like living in the jungle!".
If there are Kookaburras around where you live, and you don't have a cat or dog, it's fairly easy to get them to come in to your backyard and take minced steak out of your hand.

We had some UK visitors once who thought we had monkeys in the trees!No just the Kookaburra.

Thanks for that info. I never realised they were so big or even part of the Kingfisher family.

I would have loved to have taken those photos, I'm a detail fanatic when it comes to birds and for that reason have very few keepers
