Point taken i was just concerned that my DL2 was inferior to others in the same range. by the way what does IMHO mean

No, the DL2 is the equal of all the 6MP Pentaxes. In fact, being the most recent, its JPEG performance could conceivably be the best.

I have a D and a DL2. Both have their good and bad points but I pretty much interchange the use of them and there is no real noticeable difference in the results.

But will a better lense improve the performance of my DL2 in the same range in quality as say the K10D
The K10D has a higher resolution sensor, so using this there will be a further improvement in quality.
The trouble is, the more we go into this the more complex the answer becomes and probably less generally helpful as well, but I hope the summary given helps cut things down to the "nitty gritty".
There are lots of other options, but many are best suited to photographers who have considerable experience and the extra procedures some lenses will need will seem nothing to some, but unbelievably tedious to others...
