Get as many shots as you can of them Brian while they're happy to pose.

Very true Alan, they were taken with a 17-70mm do you think a 50mm would have been better for these kind of shots?

From a portrait perspective Brian, the lens is fine. Don't know what aperture you were using but you could do with a bit more separation from the background in #2. Either by physically increasing the distance, or by using a wider aperture. You've got that separation in #1, however the out of focus areas are cluttered. The window is particularly a distraction.

But in the scheme of things. These are the grand kids. Enjoy the moment

Thanks for that Alan I think I need to think about the shot a bit more and take a bit longer to look at the whole picture, not easy with kids!!
