K7 RAW Images

Hiya...., new to the Pentax forum, but had Pentax kit for many years, currently the fleet is an Ist'd ( Wife ) K10D and K7, my query is this,

The K10D's auto white balence has always been spot on, ( mostly ) where asim finding the newly purchased K7 has a sort of sepia tone to the raw image before being processed, I've checked all the settings in case I had selected something daft, even restored the camera to default, no change.

Could there be something I've missed, could it be faulty ?

I use Picasa 3 to view raws and delete the c.....p, then CS4 to process, both programs display the same symptoms, I did check the Adobe web site for the last ACR update last week.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris, firstly welcome to the forum

I haven't notice this Serpia tone you mention with my K-7 PEF RAW files. I mainly use CaptureOne occasionally in combination with Helicon Filter.
Have you tried both PEF and DNG? Because some programs have a particular affiliation to either file type, for example CaptureOne supports PEF much better than DNG. So it maybe a Picasa thing?

I would be happy to look at a PEF file if you want to email me one to run through CaptureOne.

Let me know If you would like to try that and I'll send you a PM.

Hi Greytop, Thanks for the reply, I've used PEF with the K10 and therefore continued that with the K7, it happens in Picasa and CS4 which made me think it was something in-camera, don't like using jpeg but have tried a shot and this was OK.

Thank you for your offer, I'll have to go and shoot something, but that would be appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

Chris,

If you could post an image taken with the K-7 and the same scene taken with the K10 at the same time, under the same lighting conditions, it would help us to understand the problem/symptoms you are experiencing.

Since it's RAW the software can use his own colour profile.
When opening the RAW file in photoshop, take a look at that.

That's the only thing I can come up with.

Hi Chris,
had a look your PEF files and yes there is slight tint to the image in comparison to the K10D image. Which one is closer to what you see? I ask because both look fine to me when you adjust the exposure on the K-7 file (I notice you had added +1 EV with the K10D image).
What would also be interesting is to see the results with auto white balance selected and exactly the same aperture, shutter speed etc.
Selecting daylight for the white balance settings in CaptureOne does give a result a little closer to the K10D.
If you don't mind I'd be happy to post the images here (or email) so you can see the output.

Try downloading the latest Picasa version. It should solve this side of your problem.

Hello Chris!
Last week I loaded the latest version of Picasa and was amazed at the true life color in PEF as well as JPEG. Side by side, one jpg the other PEF.
I shoot raw + JPEG even though my mem card is slow to read all of the data. It doesn't get in the way of what I am using the K-7 for right now.

When the photos came up side by side in Picasa I nearly did a double take as there was barely any noticeable difference in them. They were true to color too!

When DNG from the K7 I had some issues.

OK, will do, I've tried the " update " within Picasa and it says it's there are no further updates, but it's worth a try.

Greytop has been most helpful and looked at a PEF from the K10 & the K7, see post as above.

Many Thanks to all who have responded.
