Is there not a mic level control on the camera?

How many bits is the AD convertor?
Just ralised that AD is Analogue/Audio Digital but do you mean the in camera or PC AD and how do I check either?

External mics cost less than £10. Why is this "too much"? Good ones are a little more expensive, yes, but still under a ton...

An extrenal mic would need to be more sensitive in order to provide more level otherwise you'd have to plug it into an external mic amp before plugging into the camera at line level.
It can get cumbersome unless you are seriously shooting movies.
It wouldn't have been difficult or costly for Pentax to have included an input gain control.

I didnt know I could get one for as little as that, I think I could just about afford that. I just hope it fixes the problem and its not a camera fault.

Life's too short for cheap,("Buy Cheap = Buy Twice").
I bought a Rhode shotgun 'VideoMic' mostly for the Xacti camcorder, but great with the K-7, though I don't have any issue with the internal mic.

Ha ha yeah I'd be interested in one of those too! You could try one of these, but they're probably only a slight improvement on the internal mic:
Fake Sony Mic
Which you can hear here compared to the internal mic of a Kodak Zi8 video cam link
But you probably really need a good shotgun mic for proper sound quality with video.
