Ive been trying out the built in flash on my K7.

I cant seem to figure it out

I am using Av mode and pop the flash up (set to standard flash). Set the aperture to something like f22 and take a pic in a darkened room. (using my dfa 100mm). The resultant image is underexposed.

Why doesnt the camera tell me the image is going to be underexposed at the set apeture? If i set the apeture from f11 and larger the image is exposed correctly.

If i set the flash to slow speed sync the image is exposed correctly at f22.

If i want to take images close up with a macro lens which flash mode should i be using?

Thanks
Rich

GN number = Fstop * distance

Soooo K-7 GN=13 (metres).

13/22 = 0.59m

For macro you should be OK.
For your room, widen the aperture and up the ISO (I think).
Lurking is shirking.!

Have a look at p168 of the manual. memo box at bottom of page.

So when using the flash i wont get any warnings in camera regarding exposure if i start to alter the apeture etc.

Does the camera alter the flash power automatically in any situations?

I can see some exposure warning messages in the manual but nothing that relates to use of flash. Depending on which mode you are in one of the values will flash in the display. However, no mention of this then using the flash. You may have to experiment to see or wait for a definitive answer.

Or do the mental arithmetic each time you use the flash.

P-TTL alters the power of the flash to expose perfectly (or not) in ALL situations.

The flash only meters with the pre-flash and that one only goes off when you press the shutter release, if it should fire a pre-flash with every change in exposure you will get mad of the strobing light and the battery will be dead in half an hour
So no the flash can not and will not give a warning.

In the range of the flash capabilities that is.
The flash can not go higher then his maximum output and it also have a minimum output which you might hit when doing close-up work.
