Hi,
It is to set the increment between your EV levels to those set on the camera (which are also adjustable).
On the K-5 the EV Steps menu option allows you to select either 1/2 or 1/3 steps in the EV value (I presume the K-7 has a similar option). You should set your meter steps to the same as the camera:
1/3 set 0.3
1/2 set 0.5
Basically it changes the number of steps between each stop of aperture/shutter speed. i.e. instead of 1/125th, 1/250th, 1/500th by setting half stops (1/2 or 0.5) you get 1/125th, 1/180th, 1/250th, 1/330th, 1/500th...

I think I've got it - my camera is set to 1/3 steps and it does have the same as yours in options 1/2 or 1/3
so does that mean 0.3 (1/3) gives more range of aperture/shutter speeds when metering? so would this preferable?

It gives more resolution really (finer control) of the settings, however in auto exposure modes time the shutter is open for is effectively stepless (the camera determines a more precise time and displays the closest speed).
In manual it allows you tune the exposure more finely, handheld meters generally meter to 1/10th stop.
I set mine to 1/2 stops, when 'scrolling through' shutter speeds it takes fewer clicks.

I have a Pentax K7 and a Sekonic L-308S and when you press the power and mode button you can set it to match the camera. (?)
0.5, 0.3, 1.0 and a C5 shows at the top of the screen.
is this a number that is permanent or changes depending on camera settings or to do with the F stops ?
here's a youtube video and at 2:40 of the video he shows how to change it but I need to know why and erm... understand! lol
