K511s

Recently posted a topic on K5 image quality and was overwhelmed on the advise, it stopped me changing marquees. It appeared that it was the need to adjust the lens focus for the various lenses which I had accumulated.
Just taken advantage of a nearly new 511s and on initial tests the results look just what I originally hoped for

The AF Calibration for lenses should be more widely publicised and checks encouraged.

Years ago when I had my K20D, I bought a K10D and Sigma 17-70 off Ebay for a damn good price as a second body and to add to the lens collection. I took the pair out on a shoot soon afterwards and was highly disappointed with the OOF results. Once I'd adjusted the AF ( which had to be done in debug mode on the K10D ) the pair was really crisp.

In fact I'm convinced that's why the Ebay seller let the kit go cheap.

I sold the K20D and K10D for two K-5s nearly 3 years ago, but I still have and love the Sigma 17-70. It's a great quality lens for it's price range and still use it regularly. And yes it's needed different AF Calibration on each K-5

talking of focus calibration.......has anyone had to do this more than once? my K5 seems to be slightly out of focus now, can the focus change over time?

I would think that the AF adjustment might need changing with the seasons.
Temperature, humidity, age, wear, will probably all affect the mechanical alignment of the lens and camera focusing mechanisms.

Thing is, does it make enough difference to warrant regular adjustment?

I've done mine only once per lens & body combination, but the next rainy day when I have nothing better to do, I might redo the AF alignment for my lenses and bodies.

It's certainly possible.

I rechecked all my lenses on both K-5's a year or so after the first calibration and was pleased to see the settings haven't drifted. But I will recheck them gain in the not too distant future

Is there a Master Class lesson on the site? I have avoided it out of ignorance so far but my K-r and 50-200WR were great for a while and then things started getting sloppy.

Hi guys, just read the article with interest as I have problems with my K7, I tried some portraits today with just the 55mmf1.4. In the open shade just about all shots were out of focus. Moved a meter into a little sunlight and all is fine. I can see from the shots it is not camera shake as the whole shot is out of focus. Any advice or ideas would be gratefully accepted. Thanks Ian

If camera shake is to blame the whole shot will be out of focus.

Was this hand held or tripod and what shutter speed were you using.?

If you took it at 1/2000, it is highly unlikely to be camera shake. I had problems with my K-5 (no longer owned) whereby it would focus differently on the same subject with the same lens, sometimes OK, sometimes front focussed and sometimes back focussed. I wouldn't be surprised if the K7 didn't also have similar tendencies. It is something that appears to have been eradicated on the K-5II variants and the K-3.

Thanks David, I had a look at a couple of shots after standing then sat with my elbows pressed into my crossed knees and most of them are just not there. Looks like a K3 will be in the bag soon then. I have even had problems with the fisheye. Thanks to all, regards Ian

Loved the K5 based on whenever it focused it was spot on, however to inconsistent, it appears from my topic i was not alone in this issue.
However my new K5 11s is just spot on and the images are noticeably sharper, going out tomorrow for a real test snow/frost forecast, may post images if I can find the right subject matter
