K5 users, what ISO?

Just wondering;
As a lowly K20 owner I would never go above ISO 400, we have all seen great examples of high ISO shots on the K5, so what is your "base" ISO.
Do you still use the programme mode you used on your old model or has it changed since getting the K5?

I still tend to use ISO200, but I'm tempted to standardise on ISO400.

On the K20D I definitely almost always used ISO200.

95% iso 100, when light permits, obviously.

I still try and keep the ISO as low as possible, the difference at the lower end may be negligable on the K5 but I still think the less noise the better.
Shooting at ISO 1600-6400 may well produce accptable images but shooting at lower ISO still gets you a far better results, obviously there are times when the only way out of a situation is to use a higher ISO and thats where the K5 will shine as it allows you to continue shooting where other models struggle.

As for mode I would generally shoot in Av, but I find myself using TAv much more often on the K5.

Shooting RAW, I'm happy to go to ISO8000 (yes, 8-thousand)
In day-to-day shooting, up to ISO1600 yields superb results with very little noise reduction in Lightroom 3.

That said, I'll still shoot at the lowest ISO I can - depending on shutter speed & aperture. I've long used a three-way-selection - in Av mode, with ISO on one wheel, and Av on the other. In the viewfinder I can see Av/Tv/ISO and have learnt to juggle all three.

So my ISO choice will hop all over the show, depending on circumstances

i will go as high as 800 and find it fine,but i always try to keep it as low as possible

I generally stay as low as poss, ideally 100 or 200, having had a K10 & K7 I would'nt go above 400 under any circumstances.

Now with the K5 I did a test in Truro Cathedral the other week at 8000 and was very impressed, would certainly go to that setting again.

ISO80 most of the time and sometimes ISO1600 or 3200

I had the K10D before that and i used ISO100 with that one the most and max ISO1600.

On my gx20 I had no issues shooting at ISO 1600 with my k-5 which I am still finding my way around but ISO 2000 seems good....

I suppose it's horses for courses, but I go well over 400ISO on my K7 regularly, and would only avoid going much over ISO1000. The only problem with going up to high ISOs is the already limited latitude for lightening shadows etc is further reduced. With decent exposure the image grain at ISO800+ is not really noticeable at all in prints at A4 and probably beyond, although of course you can see it clearly at 1:1. But that's like looking at part of a 4m wide print!

That said I look forward to getting a K5 when I will be able to achieve similar results at crazy high ISOs - it must be liberating to go over ISO2000 and not raise an eyebrow.

I don't really have a 'base' ISO. I normally use either Av or TAv mode and either set the ISO as low as I can get away with with regards to the aperture and shutter speed I want, or I let the Camera choose in TAv mode.


In very bright conditions I'll take advantage of ISO 80 and in dark conditions will use ISO51200 is necessary. I'd rather have a noisy but sharp/detailed shot than a camera shake/blurred lower ISO version that has less noise.

I didn't really use TAv mode on my K20D, but use it often now on the K-5

Is there a noticable difference in IQ between ISO 80 and say 400 on the K5?

Hi Stefan, Don't know, the iso 80 is on the extended range, and have'nt used that yet, there's certainly not much difference between 100 & 800.

I intend to try iso 12600 at some time, but I was well impressed with iso 8000.
