I've never transferred files that way. I take the card out of the camera and slot it directly into the PC's card reader.

Did you use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option on the PC? That tells both the PC and device to stop communicating on the USB bus and when that is confirmed you can remove.
If you don't and the device is communicating in some way - even just an "I am here" message it can get hung up and a reboot is the only option which for a camera is to remove the battery.

I agree with Gamka's suggestion, Malcolm. Hook the camera back up to the pc, then click the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE tab (you'll find this near your clock on the bottom-right of your screen).

Thanks folks I'll remember to do that the next time. I've done that before with memory sticks but for some reason never thought to do this with my camera.
