uhhh... what do you expect from a Digital camera?YOU WILL NEED COMPUTER SKILLS TO USE THIS PRODUCT.
Do you bring you SD cards to a printer or something like that when they are full?

Most people who buy DLSRs have done their homework before they spent several (many??) hundreds of pounds on them, and let's face it, that these Pentax units are not cheap, and so are (or should ) not be bought without at least a little thought as to how they are going to be used!
OTOH, if you don't have a PC (which I assume you must, to be on this forum) or you don't want to try to deal with these issues, then I would seriously suggest that you take/send your camera to a decent dealer to get the work done - and he will probably then charge you around £30 to £50 for the priviledge.
BTW, although not quite yet retired, I am getting very close to that stage in my life as well!!
Not even going there. ChrisR wrote:

Not wishing to be rude, but what item of relatively advanced piece of consumer electronics does not require some computer skills to get something decent out of it. Don't forget that most DSLRs would be considered to be "very advanced" by comparison with a "fully auto point and shoot, and then hand over the memory card to your local print shop" camera that requires virtually no interaction. Even for the modern microwave oven, you need to read and understand the book before you try to make it work (as I found out to my cost last year, when I did not do the latter!)Maybe all camera boxes should carry a warning :-

"JP" would not have told you that you can reload your camera with previous firmware, if you first edit the firmware to make the camera think that you are reloading the same version that it has installed already.Stefan commented that the upgrades can be taken back to a previous version - that's not the advise I was given by "JP" for my K10D unless the requisite Pentax kit is to hand.
Apparantly, by using a HEX editor, you can edit an older firmware file and change the version number to match the version number that is already installed on the camera.
Go through the normal update procedure and it should load. You'll then be back to the previous version.
Disclaimer: If you try this, you assume all risks. Don't blame me if it goes wrong.

Ahh yes I remember the HEX editor hack now.

I have no intention of trying it - I just look daft.If you try this, you assume all risks.
I had dumped a friends (Pentax) photograph onto my K10D to trsansport it home (used the camera as a pen drive) After I had deleted it I disovered that all my subsequent photographs sequentially followed the number of the above photo. On querying how to go back to my original, much lower, sequence I was advised that the software would need to be turned back, and that I couldn't do this myself.
Lost interest in doing it and just carried on shooting

Unfortunately whoever you asked gave you a bit of a bum steer

Not a very rational assumption.

It would be nothing like that Chris. Your comparison of understanding industrial power distribution is pure hyperbole.find that a degrading comment, to those of us who find such a task as upgrading firmware daunting, you are assuming that every one that uses a digital camera, are, technically competent in its operating system.

To upgrade firmware. Download firmware. Unzip to SD card. Plug card into camera. Turn on camera while pushing a button. Wait till the screen shows it's done. Like I said, it is no harder than removing and replacing a lens on a camera.
All the instructions are in 1 2 3 form on Pentax's website. There's nothing daunting about It and as many people say here, a certain amount of computer skill is necessary for a serious digital camera user.
If you can use a modern DSLR, which you obviously can, then upgrading the software is a cinch. Whether it's worth bothering is another matter!

I have to say that regardless of anyone's experience or skills, that if you can follow the instructions for a firmware update there's no skill required.

The latest Firmware update for the K5 is V1.11. I have V1.01 already installed. Someone may have already queried this but when I download V1.11 will it incorporate the various upgrades between V1.01 and V1.11.
Sorry if this has been queried before but I couldn't find an answer on here to this question. I will have no problem doing the upgrade - it looks fairly straightforward.
Cheers....John

In your opinion, there is no skill required, but I still maintain that camera dealers should offer to upgrade firmware as a customer service, at a nominal charge if necessary. As an alterative, Pentax or which ever camera manufacturer, should make available upgrades ready loaded onto a SD cards, together with plain English instructions, again at a nominal charge. I would be more that happy to pay, even more happy if a dealer would carry out the operation for me.What about reading skills
You carry out this upgrade yourself and contaminate the camera operating system, the camera is then a bin job.
Question, if you download the firmware yourself onto a SD card, how do you know that the firmware has not been corrupted when downloading. That is assuming that you know how to download it onto a card in the first place.
Yes I do have reading skills.
I have no idea what firmware is on my recently purchased K5, other than the assurance from “SRS”, when I purchased the K5, that the latest firmware is loaded.
Take care.

Because it's in a package and when the package is damage you can't unpack it.Question, if you download the firmware yourself onto a SD card, how do you know that the firmware has not been corrupted when downloading. That is assuming that you know how to download it onto a card in the first place.
If you can move your photos from the card you can also move photos on the SD card right?
So why is it suddenly a problem when it isn't a photo but a file?
As for the update, my local dealer where i go will probably do it.
I can understand that the a company like jessops won't though.

it's not a microUSB cable on any of the Pentaces. Bret
Anyway, IIRC, you get the right cable in the box with the camera, and it only "fits one way" - so there should be no confusion later on (provided you can still find the damned thing weeks later!)
